OVERVIEW: The A.244S is an Italian lightweight, air- and ship-launched acoustic-homing torpedo introduced in 1986 as part of the NATO Submarine Torpedo (NST 58) program. It was developed to improve submarine engagement capabilities in both deep and shallow waters.

DETAILS: The designation “A.244S” identifies the upgraded version of the original A.244 lightweight torpedo, with “S” standing for “Special” or “Shallow-water optimized.” Developed under the NATO NST 58 framework, it featured major improvements in seeker logic, depth performance, and counter-countermeasure resistance. It retained the 324 mm diameter, electric propulsion (silver-zinc battery), and dual-mode acoustic homing but introduced enhanced electronics, a proximity/contact fuze, and better noise discrimination. It was deployed from ASW helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and surface ships using NATO-standard 324 mm tubes or air launch adapters.

TYPE: Lightweight acoustic-homing torpedo

FUNCTION: After air or surface launch, the A.244S proceeds to the designated target area and activates its acoustic seeker to scan for submarine contacts. It uses passive or active sonar to detect and home in on targets, detonating with a high-explosive warhead on contact or proximity.
